CF Montreal are back to winning ways after a loss last Saturday and an embarrassing loss to rivals Toronto FC in the Canadian Cup. Montreal’s early lead was erased very quickly, but a Mathieu Choiniere 2nd half goal was enough to see CF Montreal collect all three points.
First Half:
Romell Quioto got CF Montreal in front very early on in the 6th minute. Zachary Brault-Guillard found himself in some space on the right, and played in a good through ball to Quioto. Quioto set himself, before firing past the Charlotte keeper to make it 1-0 CFM.
Charlotte found themselves level just three minutes later. After a free kick was punched clear by Sebastian Breza, a second cross found Charlotte skipper Guzman Corujo, who would tap in from close range.
Montreal would have most of the chances in the first half, with Samuel Piette shot sailing over the crossbar, and Quioto with a chance for a second, but his shot went wide of the post.
Second Half:
Having only been on the pitcher for 2 minutes, Mathieu Choiniere gave Montreal the lead again in the 47th minute. Quioto held the ball up well before finding Choiniere on the left flank. Choiniere would dribble past a defender and then unleash a great shot that found the back of the net. There was a hint of offside from Brault-Guillard, but after a VAR check, the goal stood, and it was 2-1 Montreal.
Victor Wanyama almost had a third goal for CFM in the 70th, but his curling effort wide just wide of the keepers far post.
Mason Toye was making his season debut in this game and almost had his first goal of the season with his first touch. Quioto sent in a great cross, but Mason Toye’s header went just wide of the post.
Charlotte didn’t really have any other chances in the second half, and Montreal left Stade Saputo with a 2-1 win.
Even though CF Montreal should’ve had more than two goals in this game, Wilfred Nancy will be happy with the result. And it was good to see Mason Toye back from injury and to get about 20 minutes of game time under his belt.
Montreal’s next game will be against Seattle Sounders on Wednesday night.
