CF Montreal Hold League Leaders to a Draw

Going into this game, the Philadelphia Union were first place in all the MLS and had taken 15 of a possible 18 points over their last 6 games. CF Montreal have recovered from their rough start to the season, and have won their last 3 games. CF Montreal showed great commitment again, by coming from behind on yet another occasion and getting a valuable point on the road.

First Half:

Philadelphia would get the first chance of the game in the 19th minute when Kamal Miller would be penalized for a foul in the area, giving the Union a penalty. It was a 50/50 challenge that really could’ve gone either way, and unfortunately for CF Montreal, the penalty was given.

Julian Carranza would take the penalty, and he made no mistake putting it past Sebastian Breza to give the Union the 1-0 lead.

CF Montreal would have two chances in the 24th and 30th minute off of set plays, but on both occasions, Andre Blake would come up with the save.

The last good chance of the first half would fall to Dorde Mihailovic would found himself in a pocket of space just outside the area, but his shot went just wide of the post.

Second Half:

Under 15 minutes into the second half, Montreal would level the game. Alistair Johnston played a really nice ball down the wing to find Romell Quioto who beat his man, and sent in a low cross that Kei Kamara met and scored past Blake to tie the game.

CFM almost gave the lead right back after yet another turn over in their own third led to Joel Waterman getting booked for a foul to stop the Union counter attack. The free kick that followed went just over Sebastian Breza’s crossbar.

It would be very even the rest of the way with both teams trading half chances until the 92nd minute. Mihailovic earned CF Montreal a free kick from about 25 yards out. He crossed that free kick in to the area where Kamal Miller was able to get to it, but put his header over the crossbar.

I would say this is a good result for CF Montreal, as it was yet another hard earned point on the road against the league leaders. Montreal are now tied for 3rd place in the east on points. Another note for this game saw the return of Samuel Piette who subbed on for Ismael Koné in the 82nd Minute.

CF Montreal’s next game will be next saturday when they welcome Atlanta United to Stade Saputo.
