AEW Dynamite Preview: Qualifying Begins for the Owen Hart Tournament!

The Owen Hart Tournament was a really cool announcement by Tony Khan some months ago. This week, we finally have our first qualifying match for the women’s bracket. The Bunny will be taking on a mystery opponent who will be a new signing for AEW as well. We also have two other matches that have been announced. A huge one-on-one contest, and Dax Harwood returns to tag team action after his great match with CM Punk.

The Bunny vs ??? – Owen Hart Tournament Qualifier

This is one that caught the eye of many, because this announcement sort of came out of the blue. Not only is this the first qualifier for the much anticipated Owen Hart Tournament, but this is also apparently leading to a new signing for AEW.

With WWE releasing over 80 wrestlers in 2021 alone, the free agent pool has never been greater in professional wrestling. The speculation has already begun over who this new signing could be, and there are a ton of names that Tony Khan could choose from. Toni Storm, Athena (FKA Ember Moon), Nixon Newell (FKA Tegan Nox), Taya Valkyrie, and those are just a few of the very talented women wrestlers in the free agent pool. If TK was able to get any one of those four, I think would be a huge win for AEW.

Unfortunately for the Bunny, whoever goes up against an incoming wrestlers, tends to come out on the losing end. I don’t see that formula changing, and I expect the newcomer to qualify for the Owen.

Darby Allin vs Andrade El Idolo

I expect this to be a great match. Both Darby Allin and Andrade El Idolo were involved in my “most underrated match” of the year so far, when they competed for the TNT Title match against Sammy Guevara on the Rampage before Revolution. I think that these two will again put on a good show.

I’m hoping that Andrade is victorious in this match, whether by cheating or just straight up pinfall, because he just took over the now “AFO”, and they have yet to get a win under his leadership. Darby on the other hand has just been collecting victories, so a loss here might not hurt his as badly.

But if a Darby win does happen here, maybe it’ll at least sever the ties from the AFO and he and Sting, because I’m ready for both sides to go their separate ways at this point.

FTR vs Gunn Club

This is a match that FTR have to win. They have been on a bit of a downwards trajectory at the moment, and need to start racking up the wins. They recently fired their manager, Tully Blanchard, and haven’t been seen much with their faction, the Pinnacle. Not to mention, the hints being made that Bret Hart might be their new manager. Are FTR going for a face turn?

Face FTR might be a real treat for the audience, it’s no secret that FTR are one of the best tag teams in the world, and I think just their passion for tag team wrestling alone is a good start to have the fans get behind them. Beating a team like the Gunn Club this week, would be another step to gaining the AEW faithfuls approval, as “the ass boys” have really annoyed the audience since turning on them.

Keep a close eye on Tony Khan‘s twitter account, because that’s where a lot of matches get announced prior to Dynamite!

All this and so much more can be seen on TBS (TSN in Canada) every Wednesday night at 8PM EST.
