The tough start to the MLS season continued for CF Montreal on Saturday. They travelled to New York to play NYCFC. CFM were outclassed from first to final whistle. While looking like New York were a full league above CF Montreal, CFM also made multiple mistakes at the back, never really giving themselves a chance in this game.
First Half:
The first half was one to forget for CF Montreal. They were completely outplayed by New York and the scoreline reflected that. City were on the front foot right away and came close 4 minutes in. Valentin Castellanos found himself some space at the edge of box, but fizzed his shot just wide of Sebastian Breza’s post. 3 minutes later, New York would make CFM pay after a corner wasn’t cleared properly and a chipped ball in was headed very cleverly by Talles Magno down to Alex Callens who made no mistake.
Montreal had a glorious chance to level the game in the 13th minute off a corner of their own, but Joel Waterman somehow missed a beautiful Rida Zouhir cross.
In the 20th minute, playing out of the back would cost CF Montreal again. Victor Wanyama would miss-hit his pass that went straight to Santiago Rodriguez who chipped Breza wonderfully to make it 2-0.
New York City had the ball in the back of the net again in the 30th minute, but thankfully Talles Magno’s effort was ruled out as the young Brazilian was offside.
Going into the break, New York had a 2 goal lead and it was very much deserved. Sebastian Breza made a few good saves, to make sure the scoreline wasn’t even worse.
Second Half:
The second 45 started much better for CF Montreal. Two subs linked up in the 51st minute to half the deficit. Dorde Mihailovic made a great run past multiple New York defenders and his low cross was met by Zachary Breault-Guillard who scored his first goal of the season.
Montreal would get close in the 55th and 61st minute with Mihailovic forcing two saves out of NYCFC keeper Sean Johnson, and Romell Quioto slotted by Johnson, but was ruled offside.
Then against the run of play, Talles Magno would get his goal. In the 64th minute, he headed the cross from Andres Jasson past a stretched Sebastian Breza to restore the 2 goal lead.
It was basically cruise control from their for New York, as Montreal never really threatened again, and another mistake at the back, this time by Joel Waterman, lead to the fourth goal for NYCFC. Waterman played a pass directly to Thiago Andrade who scored past Breza and sealed this one in the 84th.
New York looked like they were in full control all game, and never looked in doubt of losing this one. Wilfred Nancy really has his work cut out for him, as this formation doesn’t seem to be working, and they already given up 3 goals from misplaced passes from the defence that if just cleared away wouldn’t lead to anything.
Montreal have another Champions League tie this Wednesday against Cruz Azul, before heading to Atlanta on Saturday.
