AEW Dynamite Preview: All About the Tournaments!

With most of the title matches already being set for Full Gear, we need to see how the two tournaments currently going on will pan out. With Bryan Danielson already in the finals, this week’s Dynamite will see who will go on to Full Gear and face Danielson for a chance to become #1 contender. We will also get another first round match up from the TBS title tournament, and another high-profile match for Andrade El Idolo.

All that and much more, and here is where we’ll break it all down.

Jon Moxley vs Orange Cassidy – World Title Eliminator Semi-Final

When you first look at this match on paper, I notice right away the extreme clash in styles between these two wrestlers. Jon Moxley has been running through the AEW roster, and most recently made really quick work of 10 to advance in the tournament. In the other corner, you have Orange Cassidy, someone who is the opposite of the word intense. It’ll be really interesting to see how AEW book this match.

This is the second semi-final in the AEW Title Eliminator tournament, and these two men are fighting for a chance to meet Bryan Danielson in the finals for a chance to jump right to the top of the AEW rankings. With the great matches that Danielson has been putting on, I can’t wait to see what an awesome match Danielson would put on with either Jon Moxley or Orange Cassidy.

I think that AEW have been foreshadowing the eventual final between Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson, because they had Bryan beet buddy of Moxley, Eddie Kingston on his way to the finals. I’d have Mox destroy Orange Cassidy here, in a very similar fashion to the way he beat 10 last week. It makes Moxley look amazing going into the finals and Orange Cassidy is a guy who can easily bounce back from a loss like that because of his immense popularity.

Anna Jay vs Jamie Hayter – TBS Tournament First Round

This is an exciting match up for the future of the AEW women’s division. Both wrestlers in this match are really young with Jamie Hayter being 26 and Anna Jay only 23. It’s great to see AEW having so much confidence in their young talent.

It was a big shock when Jamie Hayter made her AEW return and aligned herself with Britt Baker. The hardcore fans know what Hayter is about, but she’s been making herself known to the rest of the fan base by helping Britt Baker win multiple matches since her return. Tonight, the focus is on her to advance in the tournament. Standing across from her, is Anna Jay. Jay has been in some high profile angles already in her young career in AEW, and being in the inaugural TBS tournament is another notch on her belt.

If I was just looking at this match as a one-off, I’d sway slightly in Anna’s favour. The only reason I’m picking Hayter in this match, is because the winner of this match faces Thunder Rosa, and we all know the history between Rosa and Britt Baker’s faction.

Cody Rhodes vs Andrade El Idolo

The Cody Rhodes vs the fans story for me, is one of the most interesting things happening in wrestling right now after last week. We seen it before, where a wrestler is supposed to be a babyface, but the crowd just aren’t having it, and boo that wrestler hard. What I don’t remember seeing is the wrestling company actually acknowledging the fact that the babyface character is working on screen. And that’s exactly what both Cody Rhodes and Malakai Black did on last weeks episode. While Cody was talking to the live audience, saying that he wouldn’t turn on them, he was interrupted by Andrade El Idolo. An Attack ensued, and thus the reasoning for this match.

This is a match I am really looking forward too, because both Cody and Andrade are great workers in the ring, and I’m really looking forward to where this goes. I’m also hoping we get more clarification on this Andrade/ Malakai Black partnership.

This one can go either way, but I think that Andrade has more to gain from a win here, so he’s my pick to win this one.

As of writing this, these are the only scheduled matches, so I’m sure we’ll be hearing from the like of MJF, or Darby Allin to further their feuds for Full Gear. And we should also be getting the announcement from the Inner Circle on who American Top Team will have on their team for the big 10-man tag match.

All this and so much more can be seen on TNT (TSN in Canada) every Wednesday night at 8PM EST.
