On this past Friday’s AEW Rampage, Tony Khan promised a major announcement, and boy did he deliver! CM Punk made his incredibly emotional return to professional wrestling in his home town, after 7 years away from the business. CM Punk will be live on Dynamite for the first time tonight! We also have the second semi-finals match in the tag team eliminator tournament, Malakai Black takes on another member of the Nightmare Factory, and a couple more single’s matches, and a couple of trios matches as well.
All that and some much mote, and here is where we’ll break it all down.
CM Punk Live on Dynamite
Where to even begin with this…It was rumoured for weeks, that Tony Khan and CM Punk finally agreed on a deal that would see Punk in a wrestling ring again. The rumours really picked up when a scheduled Rampage taping became a live show in the biggest venue AEW has ever taken place, in Chicago, Punk’s hometown. Now August 20th, 2021 will go down as a massive day in professional wrestling history, as the day the landscape of the business changed again. Punk’s return had a deafening pop, it had grown men crying, and all in all, created one of the most memorable moments in the last decade.
After the amazing reception that CM Punk received, he got in the ring and cut a typical fantastic promo about how he’s excited to work with the young talent on the roster, and how he’s back. One name he picked out right away, is Darby Allin. So as soon as CM Punk returns, we have his first match, as it’s set for ALL OUT, CM Punk vs Darby Allin.
So now that we know the opponent, and we know the event, what will CM Punk have in mind for tonight’s Dynamite? It’s also an interesting first opponent, as Darby is super over with the crowd, but nobody is currently as popular as CM Punk. Will they have Darby work as the heel? Whatever the case may be, hopefully we find out more from Punk’s tv time tonight.
Malakai Black vs Brock Anderson
So far, Malakai Black’s AEW run has been pretty successful. He had an awesome debut where he kicked the heads off of both Arn Anderson and Cody Rhodes. Then he said he’d put Cody down, and he did just that. He was victorious in his AEW debut against one of the biggest names in the business, and beat him in about 4 minutes. That wasn’t enough for Black, because Cody was giving what looked like a retirement speech before Malakai continued his beat down. And the cherry on top is that he also has a sick entrance theme and appearance.
So it’s safe to say that AEW are behind Malakai and his creative vision for this character, so it’s tough to see this match with rookie Brock Anderson going too long. In a promo segment backstage on last week’s Dynamite, even his father, Arn Anderson, was trying to talk Brock out of this match with no success. Brock knows he doesn’t stand much of a chance but he’s a fighter.
I think that’s a cool look for Brock, because he no doubt will take a Black Mass to the chin, but to know that and still want to fight, gives him an added edge and toughness. I see Malakai walking through the young Anderson without much trouble. It is interesting to note, that as of right now, Malakai Black doesn’t have an opponent for ALL OUT, so maybe we’ll find out more on this tonight.
Lucha Bros vs Varsity Blonds – Tag Team Eliminator Tournament Semi-Finals
This is the second of the semi-final matches, as Jurassic Express came out the winners against Private Party on Rampage Friday night. This is an awesome match up of two very promising teams. I think Varsity Blonds have something special brewing, and I really like the idea of having Julia hart as they’re manager, but with the amount of teams this AEW tag division has, I think they’re still down the pecking order for a PPV cage match.
I think the Lucha Bros are the smart choice this for this match, and they’re actually my pick to win the tournament and challenge the Young Bucks for the title at ALL OUT. The primary reason I’m going with them is because they are such a versatile team. I see them playing the role of heels in the match vs Jurassic Express, but then to be the faces in the cage match against the Bucks. I also think that whoever wins this tournament will go on and become the new tag team champions. We know that the Lucha Bros and Young Bucks are magic together, so what better way to crown new champions, then to have a wild first ever tag team cage match in AEW history.
We also have two other single’s matches announced for tonight’s show at this time. We have Red Velvet taking on the returning Jamie Hayter, and Orange Cassidy will take on Matt Hardy one-on-one. We also have two trios matches announced for Dynamite with Jon Moxley, Eddie Kingston, and Darby Allin taking on the Wingmen, and the Factory will face the Gunn Club. Other things we can look for are, will PAC make it known what were Andrade El Idolo’s stipulations are, and will we hear from Chris Jericho after his big loss to MJF?
All this and so much more can be seen on TNT (TSN in Canada) every Wednesday night at 8PM EST.
