None of us believed this would happen. What a story so far! The Habs win 3-2 in Overtime tonight ending the Winnipeg Jets’ season. Les Canadiens move on to Round three and will faceoff against the winner of the series between Colorado and Las Vegas. Currently tied 2-2, you can bet your sweet little a$$ that every single Habs fan will be watching anticipating the outcome.
With a two goal lead going into the first intermission with goals from Lehkonen and Gustaffson the boys in red were well on their way to victory and ultimately sweeping the Jets. Paul Maurice is one of the best coaches in the league, so we knew the Jets would not sit down and wait for the Habs to blow the lead. Without one of their top forwards (Mark Scheifele is serving a 4 game suspension for his hit on Jake Evans) the Jets were disturbed but they came back and tied the game in the second period, with two goals from defenseman Logan Stanley. No goals in the third period forces OT for the first time this series.
OT is very familiar to the Montreal Canadiens these playoffs having won two game vs the Toronto Maple Leafs outside of regulation. The Habs have the advantage in OT strictly based on their speed. Byron, Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Caufield and Toffoli all add an element in OT that the Jets struggle against.
Suzuki battles for the puck in the corner and drops the puck to rookie Cole Caufield. Caufield takes a few steps and sends a perfect pass to the Habs leading goal score Tyler Toffoli who bangs it in for the Game Winning Goal sending the Jets to the golf course.
We’ve already heard the hater say that the Habs only beat the Leafs because Tavares was injured and now the same about Scheifele’s suspension. The Habs have won seven games in a row including 4 elimination games vs Toronto. Habs are buzzing!! None of us believed this would happen. Well maybe Bergevin was confident.
