Even though we had 3 title matches last week, we still have 2 championship matches scheduled for tonight’s dynamite. After ending SCU as team last week, the tag team champions will now set their sights on much younger challengers tonight. We’ll also see the returning NWA women’s champion putting her belt on the line, two veterans collide in singles action, Mox and Kingston will be in tag team action, and the latest instalment of Nightmare Family vs the Factory will take place.
All that and more, and here is where we’re going to break it all down.
Young Bucks (C) vs Varsity Blonds – Tag Team Title Match
The Young Bucks have been on a hot streak recently, and since re-joining Kenny Omega and the Super Elite, Matt and Nick have risen to another level. They delivered once again last week, when they defeated SCU for their 5th title defence. We didn’t have to wait too long to see their next title match, as tonight they put their titles on the line against the Varsity Blonds.
The Varsity Blonds have been quietly racking up some tag team wins as well. Other then the 4-way tag team match that SCU won, Brian Pillman and Griff Garrison have won 6 of the last 7 matches. Although most of the wins were on AEW Dark, it still gives credibility to a team challenging for the titles, because at least they’ve been winning matches somewhere.
If the Young Bucks lose the titles tonight, it would easily go down as one of the biggest upset in AEW history, so I’ll be going with the Bucks coming out victorious here. It’s also cool to note that, Brian Pillman JR’s dad recently had his story told on “Dark Side of the Ring”, so this match get attract some extra eyes on the Varsity Blonds.
Serena Deeb (C) vs Red Velvet
Serena Deeb is making her return from knee surgery tonight, and she won’t have time to ease back into things, as her NWA women’s championship is on the line. Serena Deeb has really reinvented herself since leaving the WWE last year, and that unfortunate knee injury really derailed all of the momentum that Deeb had built up. Deeb will be looking to get that momentum back on track as she looks to earn her 5th title defence as she takes on Red Velvet.
Red Velvet is another wrestler who is looking to get back on track, as Velvet lost her big feud to Jade Cargill, and that has resulted in the spotlight focusing on Cargill instead of Velvet. Red Velvet has been tagging with Big Swole recently with some success, but the best way to get all the attention back, is to become the new NWA women’s champion!
This will be the first match for Serena Deeb since February 17th, and we’ll see if she has any ring rust. I think this will be an entertaining match, and I think the returning champ will be able to see off the challenger to retain her title.
Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston vs The Acclaimed
After the big announcement last week that the Young Bucks have challenged Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston to a match at Double or Nothing, I think it’s a good idea to continue to showcase Mox and Kingston as a team. It’s been so far so good, for Mox and Eddie and above all else, they have been super entertaining as a tag team. And to think, they basically came together as a tag team because the explosives didn’t go off as planned at Revolution…
Standing across the ring from Mox and Kingston tonight will the Acclaimed. The Acclaimed’s time in AEW has be pretty solid, and right now they have a record of 16-4. For any team, that’s a great record, and they will try to build off of that record and take it right to Mox and Kingston.
The Acclaimed have a great record, and it really won’t hurt them at all if they take a loss to Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston. It wouldn’t make sense to have Mox and Kingston lose in the lead up to Double or nothing. It’ll also be fun to see the freestyle that Max Caster makes about Mox and Kingston, and then see how much that pisses them off!
There is also a big matchup between Christian Cage and Matt Sydal, that is sure to be a great match, as these guys have loads of combined experience. This should be a great face vs face matchup that I’m really looking forward to. We also have Anthony Ogogo going one-on-one with Austin Gunn, and AEW women’s champion Hikaru Shida will take on Rebel.
The Icing on the cake for tonight’s episode, is that the ENTIRE card for Double or Nothing is scheduled to be announced!
All this and much more can be seen on TNT (or TSN in Canada) at 8PM EST.
