Canelo Alvarez defeats Billy Joe Saunders via TKO in the 8th round and defends his WBA, WBC and wins the WBO Super Middleweight titles. 70k people showed up to AT&T Stadium to watch the biggest star in the world, Canelo Alvarez show us why he is that and much more.
Let’s not get it twisted here, I don’t care what the judges had on the scorecard but Billy Joe could’ve been wining that fight. The first round was prototypical Canelo, he took his time to establish distance and his reach against a long and powerful Saunders and downloaded all the info necessary to start showing everyone why he’s the best in the world. Canelo established his hook and counter shots but Saunders ketp coming exhanging blows and combos.
Safe to say, the rounds were even going into the 7th round. The 8th round started and Canelo started peppeing Saunders with uppercuts and hooks. He started to show us what everyone paid to see. Canelo lands a beauty uppercut that shatters the eye of Saunders. After the round ended, Saunders’ corner threw in the towel when Billy Joe said he couldn’t see out of his right eye.
Canelo does it again! The Mexican born fighter proves again why his is the Pound for Pound best fighter in the world and possibly one of the biggest stars in the world. Adding Saunders to his list of kills adds to the legacy he has built. Is Canelo the biggest star in the world? I think so. How can we possibly watch last night’s festivities with the support of a crowd in the US and not see the mega star that Canelo has become.
Since Canelo’s loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, he has been lights out including a very sketchy draw result in his first match up vs Gennady Golovkin. It seems the fighter from Guadalajara Mexico has a huge target on his back but yet, never says no to a challenge. Even with the manadatory fights like vs Yildin, Canelo has taken on everyone in the division. Amir Khan? KO. Sergey Kovalev? KO. Cotto, Jacobs, Smith? All won by Unanimous Decision.
Canelo is the A side and he will take on all comers (no pun intended). Even Demetrius Andrade showing up at the post fight press conference calling Canelo out. Seemed a bit premature for Andrade. The WBO Middleweight champ has wanted Canelo for a while but hasn’t put together a string of victories worth the Mexican’s time. At 56-1-2 Canelo has nothing left to prove yet he still calls out undefeated Caleb Plant for his next fight.
