This instalment of AEW Dynamite will have big shoes to fill after last weeks incredible episode where Britt Baker and Thunder Rosa stole the show. If you haven’t checked that out yet, do yourself a favour and watch it ASAP, as Dave Meltzer has ranked this joint highest women’s match ever in North America!
Now onto tonight’s episode, once again, we have another monster card scheduled. The AEW champion will be in action, a 6-man tag involving the debut match for the newly formed faction, the Pinnacle, and the TNT championship will be on the line. Here is where we’ll break down all the action.
The Pinnacle (FTR & Shawn Spears) vs Varsity Blonds & Dante Martin
After their shocking debut two weeks ago, MJF announced to the world that this new formed power group will be known as the Pinnacle. This faction includes, Friedman, Wardlow, Shawn Spears, FTR and Tully Blanchard. With what seems to be the perfect blend of veterans and young stars, all the ingredients are there for The Pinnacle to dominate the world of professional wrestling for a long, long time. Tonight will be the groups in ring debut and it’ll be FTR and Shawn Spears representing the faction.
FTR are well known as one of the best tag teams in the world, and have won tag titles everywhere they’ve wrestled. Shawn Spears is a great worker, he is a true veteran of the business and throw Tully Blanchard out their as the manager of this team, this is a recipe for success.
What stands in the way of this success, is the extremely young team of Brian Pillman Jr, Griff Garrison and Dante Martin. This teams average age is 23 1/2 years old, which is unheard of in wrestling. Pillman Jr & Garrison have been tagging together for a while now and joining them is Dante Martin (from Top Flight) who has been competing in singles action recently as his brother and tag partner is out injured.
It’ll be a HUGE upset if Varsity Blonds & Martin could pull off a win here but I seriously doubt it. Expect to see The Pinnacle chalk up the first of many wins for this faction in the upcoming years.
Darby Allin (C) vs John Silver: TNT Championship Match
Darby Allin came out last week with Sting, and got on the mic to say that him defending the TNT title only 3 times since he became champion is BS. He threw out an open challenge to the faction of the greatest TNT champion of all time Mr Brodie Lee, the Dark Order, and the challenge was answered by John Silver.
The Dark Order as a group turned face after the tragic passing of Mr Brodie Lee (Jon Huber), and have been fan favourites since they started making hilarious videos on popular Youtube show “Being the Elite”. Most notably, John Silver has really come out of his shell and shown how funny he is, but don’t ever look how good he and Reynolds are as a tag team. Both are great wrestlers and “Johnny Hungee” will have his first chance to become AEW Champion.
This matchup of Darby Allin vs John Silver is an extremely fresh encounter, it also has the potential to be a great match. Both guys are very athletic and their styles should mesh perfectly. I think AEW could’ve done a bit better of a job making Silver feel like a more credible challenger, but that’s just me nitpicking. Having said that, I think Darby will retain in what should be a really fun match.
Kenny Omega vs Matt Sydal
Kenny Omega sent out a challenge to Matt Sydal on the first ever episode of AEW Dark Elevation, that if he was able to beat Michael Nakazawa, he would earn a match with Kenny himself. If Sydal can beat Omega tonight, he would earn a future shot at the AEW championship.
Step one, was completed by Sydal when he defeated Nakazawa last Monday and we’re now set up for phase two. Matt Sydal is a fantastic professional wrestler who has travelled the world impressing everyone with his high-risk offence, and is now levelled up his ground game since his arrival in AEW. This will be a great test for Sydal and the AEW champion, Kenny Omega is the best measuring stick in the business to see how good your wrestling ability is.
What more can I say about Kenny Omega, The best bought machine seems to be back and he’s taking over the world of wrestling once again. Omega is the current AEW champion, the current AAA champion and is scheduled for a title vs title match with Impact champion Rich Swann April 24th. Kenny Omega has a lot on his plate at the moment, and if he overlooks Matt Sydal, he might find himself in another title match before his historic match against Swann.
I hope that AEW does a recap for this match because not everyone saw Dark Elevation and may have missed how this match came about. AEW have proved that they excel at video packages, so I hope this match gets one as a quick recap.
I can’t see Sydal beating Omega clean to earn his shot, but Omega has been building a LONG list of people who want revenge on the AEW champion, who could end up costing the champ this match. I predict to see a one-winged angel to give Omega the W.
All that action and that’s even the half of it. Tay Conti will go one-on-one with Nyla Rose in a rematch from the women’s eliminator tournament, and in another huge 6-man tag match, the Young Bucks and Brandon Cutler will take on the Lucha Bros and a returning Laredo Kid.
Catch all this action live tonight on TNT (TSN2 in Canda) at 8PM EST.
