After last years frustrating season, La Galaxy have appointed Greg Vanney as their new Head coach. Coming off a rough season, having resigned from Toronto Fc in which he led to a treble in 2017; winning the MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield and Canadian Championship.
After 6 years experience in Toronto, it’s only right he comes ‘back home’ to La Galaxy, where he played as a defender from 1996 to 2001. He knows the club well and will be looking to bounce back as soon as the season kicks off.
Though the team has come a LONG way since he last kept balls out of the net, attracting star players from Europe; David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have all tore up the pitch in hot Cali sun.
Some would say they were so bad last year, due to losing Ibra and not replacing him.
One team who is in negotiations to sign an attacking player from Europe is Dc United. They are looking to bring Mesut Özil over, which could be a very smart idea. He mostly plays as a CAM, but can fit in as a winger too. The German has proven to be one of the most creative players of the last decade leading Most Assists in a season multiple times during his time in La Liga (3) and the Premier League (1).
You can see some of his skills here;
Having fallen out with manager Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, he is motivated to leave this month, due to being axed from the squad. The playmaker will make a difference right away and bring a champions mentality to the Dc. The player is also negotiating a 3 year contract with Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, so it’s safe to say he is keeping his options open.
Another club looking for a new manager is Toronto Fc. You could have guessed right?
Vanney departing in December has left a hole to fill, and they may have narrowed it down to 3 candidates. Former coach at both New York Fc, and Ligue 1’s Nice, Patrick Viera. Also on the short list is Chris Armas who led New York Redbulls for the last 2 years. The last potential new TFC coach is former Usa International and Hannover 96, rightback Steve Cherundolo.
Though Cherundolo may not know the MLS as much as the previous 2 candidates, he knows soccer well having played in the Bundesliga for 5 years. Once retiring, the former Rb stayed with Hannover 96 and began his coaching career in both Germany’s 1st and 2nd division as an assistant. He also was head manager of both the U15 and U17 squads.
Speaking about European football…
Italian giants Juventus are looking to steal a young home bred rightback and bring him to Serie A. Ryan Reynolds is the player they are looking to add to their squad this month. He would be linking up with a familiar face, Usa International Cm Weston McKennie. They both know each other from coming up in Fc Dallas’s youth system. Juve have been impressed with their American, who recently scored a beautiful goal against Barcelona in the UCL. Reynolds has proven to be a skillful player, setting up 3 goals last season. At only 19 years old, he has further time to develop the Italian way.
Some of his recent highlights:
Last but not least : the European dream. Dallas Fc, one of the best clubs for young player development, Juventus’s Weston McKennie, Bayern Munich’s Chris Richard, are sending 6 young players to Germany for a 3 week training session. The players will be joining former teammate Richards, and will undergo an in depth training with Bayern Munich for close to 1 month. The Champions League winners are not new to young MLS players, having also Canadian LB Alphonso Davies in their squad. This proves Mls is a league that is becoming stronger, and more renown, giving young North American players a chance to shine on this biggest European pitch’s.
That’s all for now.
